The NIH has announced over 100 grants for Alzheimer's research. The funded projects will include "studies to identify additional risk factor genes associated with Alzheimer's, improve diagnostic tools, find biomarkers, develop therapies, conduct clinical trials and explore preventive measures." The Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative alone will receive $24 million dollars.

I'm really glad to see that some of this money will be funding Dr. David Loewenstein's research. I've written about his work on cognitive rehabilitation for people with Alzheimer's on The Tangled Neuron.
Here's how a press release describes the study that was funded:
...researchers will examine how exercise training, cognitive training, or a combination of both, might impact immune and inflammatory biomarkers and cognitive health in older adults with MCI [Mild Cognitive Impairment]. The randomized trial, under a $1 million grant to David Lowenstein, Ph.D., of the University of Miami, will examine a broad array of outcomes and will include Hispanic and non-Hispanic volunteers.
