Here's a link to a New York Times article about a recently-announced study that indicates bone strenthening drugs may help prevent breast cancer, especially in estrogen-receptor negative tumors (triple negative which is what I have). Very interesting and certainly something I'll be looking into further.

I am participating in a study to see how effective the drugs are at preventing metastases. I was randomized to the zometa group, the IV arm of the study,. I am excited to be a part of this study which lasts 3 years.
I was diagnosed in 2003 with stage 4 breast cancer with bone metz and receive bone strengthening drugs every month via IV. I was only receiving it ever 3 months but last year when tumor marker numbers started to increase, I started up on a full series of chemo (8mths) and he cranked the Zometa up to monthly. I had only received 4 treatments in 04 and Avastin was not yet on the scene so I did the 36 treatments of Avastin and Taxol and went on the monthly treat of Zometa. Numbers are good and no problems. I was interested to hear the new study concerning the bone strenghtners.
