A 14 year old female with Trisomy 21 and a new diagnosis of Pre-B ALL is undergoing induction using a modified COG protocol, and is receiving asparaginase (Elspar) to deprive the leukemic cells of essential circulating asparagine. Asparaginase has several known adverse effects, including decreased synthesis of several coagulation and anticoagulation factors, including fibrinogen, antithrombin III and in some cases, proteins C and S.
