Next month marks the 30th anniversary of the first reported cases of AIDS in the United States. To commemorate the anniversary, the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, with the help of more than 100 volunteers, installed a massive red ribbon on the side of the city's Twin Peaks.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the first cases of the virus that would be known as AIDS on June 5, 1981. San Francisco was one of the first cities in the country to experience epidemic levels of the disease. Today, more than 56,000 people nationwide are infected with the disease every year, according to a release.
