Alzheimer's is not listed as the cause of death on a Coroner's Certificate. People die from a variety of other conditions. Pneumonia, Complications from slip and fall, Bedsores with subsequent infectious process, Poor nutrition, with the obvious sequella. As to the prognosis of life expectancy, it depends on a variety of factors, age of onset and physical status at that time, degree of cognitive defect, support system (which boils down to $$$$$ available for care).

As stated by Stephen, which is correct, patients do not technically die from Alzheimer's Disease but from conditions caused by the disease (such as aspiration pneumonia from forgetting how to swallow and allowing food or saliva to go into the lungs, a fall from declining physical conditioning related to forgetting muscle movements, etc...).

Yes, I agree, I guess the proper response should be that, people die WITH Alzheimer's, & the disease contributes to an earlier death/poorer prognosis. Thanks

Technically, no. It is thought that death comes as a result of a complication of the disease such as pneumonia.

Technically, yes- what I stated is correct-
"The disease contributes to an earlier death/poorer prognosis."
is the same as what you say-,
"death comes as a result of a complication of the disease"

    Def: of complication:
something that introduces, usually unexpectedly, some difficulty, problem, change, etc
Pathology. a concurrent disease, accident, or adverse reaction that aggravates the original disease.
    Syn.,: aggravation

I hope that clarifies my statement

    Thanks
