Can a small dose of morphin in a kneejoint provoke itching?

Can a small dose of morphine in a kneejoint provoke itching? I have read that the itching has nothing to do with histamine-release and that it is provoked in the cns. The other question is -can morphine provoke itching locally?
We are doing a lot of knee-arthroscopies and have been using 4 mg of morphine in the joint in case there should be chronic inflammation and in that case locally my-receptors. I know that only in that situation the morphine will be effective. A month ago one of our surgents observed that some patients were complaining about itching in the kneejoint area. I have been looking in the literature but found nothing.

I don't think it has to necessarily be injected into your bloodstream to cause itching. I have only had morphine injected inter-muscularly and it did cause itching for me. I would think it could cause itching when injected into a joint as well but I don't have any first-hand experience.
