  • My Uncle has been in the hospital off and on for the last 2 months. He had a liver transplant 5/12/01, has Hep C, Diabetic for years. He was placed on hemodialysis today due to kidney failure. The docs told my Aunt it is their attempt to "jump start" the kidneys. Not sure what to think at this point. He has LIVER FAILURE, KIDNEY FAILURE, HEART FAILURE.......they want to do a liver/kidney transplant but he has too much infection in his blood stream. As a family we are lost! I am in the medical field, but when it comes to your own family, emotions take over and knowledge goes out the door

For a multiple of situations, hemodialysis can provide sufficient respite for the Kidney's to resume their independent function. A famous situation was when the Jack in the Box E Coli poisonings due to poorly cooked beef, caused renal failure in a number of individuals. Notably several young children whose toxemic levels caused multiple system failure. The dialysis allowed enough time for the blood levels to decline dramatically. This support allowed the blood to clear and for the kidneys to regain their function.

As to older individuals in this situation or others the result can be the same.

For End Stage Renal Failure the outcomes are much less favorable. However given enough time the reparative ability can be quite dramatic in a small subset of individuals.
