Do eating disorders exist in areas of hunger?

As a medical doctor who has worked in areas of the world where the main problem is not too much food, but rather too little food, and where the daily fight is not against obesity but against hunger and malnutrition, I have NEVER met a human being, baby, child or adult, who did not eat anything eatable anytime --- and without throwing up afterwords. Is the western obsession with food, obesity, slimness and so-called "Health" a by-product of our food over-availability, and the fact that most of us are never really hungry, only more or less full?

I have searched the Net and only found references to studies of anorexia and bulimia from the rich countries, not one from the poor.

As you are aware, eating disorders are not about food, but other behavioral issues. Genetics can be involved by setting one up for risk factors. We don't know the pathophysiciology, so treatment is difficult. However, pressence or abscence of food does not change behavior. The lack of studies in "poor" countries should not be surprising.
