As a class beta-blockers can cause hair loss as a side effect. Commonly used beta-blocker medications include propanolol, metoprolol and atenolol.

Other medications such as hydrochlororthiazide (HCTZ) [diuretic], amlodipine [calcium channel blocker], lisinopril [ACE inhibitor] have different side effects. Amlodipine can cause peripheral edema (swelling) in about 10% of users and various ACE inhibitors can cause a dry persistent cough. Some medications, such as minoxidil, actually promote hair growth.

It is important for you to discuss your experience of hair loss with your health care provider to determine if the hair loss you are experience is related to the hypertension medication as a side effect, or if it is actually a manifestation of another process.
