Recommended temperatures are usually a do-not-exceed temperature. So it is safe to store these meds at a lower temp, for example in a refrigerator on the door. If unsure, ask a pharmacist.

Some special drugs need more careful temp control. Any registered pharmacist can advise you, and NY city seems to have one on every corner.

For power failures, I use a foam beverage cooler and keep poly-bagged ice in it so the vials stay dry. You can usually achieve an internal temperature around 40 degrees this way, lower if you use more ice.

Some other meds are naturally kept in the refrigerator, and should be safe there as well as in a beverage cooler.

Don't use dry ice as that would freeze the meds, possibly ruining them.
    • Thank you for your prompt answer! I'm lactose-intolerant and rely on lactase enzyme tablets labelled "store at room temperature". ie: 68 - 77 degrees F (20 - 25 degrees C) Enzymes are fragile and these degrade if too warm or too cold - with well-known unpleasant results!
For other, more necessary medications, there doesn't seem to be any devise or module to be programmed to maintain that range. Pharmacists have no answer, or guidelines, nor do even the drug manufacturers!

Hmmm, pharmacies obviously need to protect valuable stocks of drugs.I'll do some research. In the meantime, here's an article of interest: http://thyroid.about.com/od/thyroiddrugstreatments/a/drugsinsummer.htm
