What does it mean if during a blood test it is discovered that your red blood cells are "split"?

Recently my father was told that his red blood cells were split and he was referred out for more tests. What does this mean and what are the options?

"Split" is not a word typically used to describe red cells. It would be good to see the pathology report to see how the red cells were described in the report itself. It is possible that the person describing the "split" red cells may have been referring to a condition known as microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, a type of anemia in which red cells are fragmented or broken into smaller pieces. This condition has a number of different causes and needs to be evaluated further. Please post again if you get more information, and we'll try to help out more!
