Alcohol can be a depressant on cardiac tissue. The affect varies across individuals with some folks having drastic reduction in heart function with relatively small quantities of alcohol consumption. Fortunately, it is a relatively reversible form of heart failure if identified in isolation (ie. without accompanying coronary artery disease). I would imagine the same holds roughly true either directly or indirectly for its effects on atrial fibrillation tendencies.
    • Thanks but do not really understand what you are implying - what exactly does alcohol do to someone with atrial fibrillation if say you drink at least half a glass of whisky a night - tumbler glass that is. Thanks.

It depends. Atrial fibrillation is an abnormal heart beat. That can be benign in some people and fatal in others. One factor is whether the atrial fibrillation evolves into a very rapid heart beat rate, which can be acutely damaging to the heart. Alcohol can exacerbate this latter condition. In some people this amount of alcohol may have zero detectable effect. In others, even one tenth this amount can trigger an episode of rapid heart beat. Thus, the logical recommendation would be to err on the side of caution and refrain from alcohol use or cut back substantially unless you want to find out which type of heart you have.....
    • Excellent thank you I can now show my husband the damage he is doing.
