Are there any new drugs in the pipeline to treat alzheimer's?

Is there anything coming soon to reverse the disease's effects? I heard something about caffeine helping. Has any research been published about that?

Dimebon is a very promising drug for Alzheimer Disease. It's an old, safe, and cheap drug that was used in Russia as an antihistamine for several years. A key study ("Effect of dimebon on cognition, activities of daily living, behaviour, and global function in patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.") was published in 2008 (http://pubmed.gov/18640457) and concludes that dimebon is safe, well tolerated, and significantly improved the clinical course of patients with mild-to-moderate AD.

There several new drugs in the pipeline. Currently, there are 558 studies for AD listed at www.clinical trials.gov, though not all of them involve potential therapies. Findings from promising studies are often posted on the Alzheimer's association website: www.alz.org.
You can also get information by doing a search for "Alzheimer's" plus "Medline" for a list of recent publications. A nutritional supplement called Axona is now available but I have not had any patients on it yet (I am a PD specialist). I have heard mixed reviews from my AD colleagues about this.

I have an article published in Medpedia which gives an overview of new and marketed drugs in AD.

    Solanezumab hope for Alzheimer's Disease

A second multimedia interactive article deals with the leading monoclonal antibody in Phase III trials.
