Dear collegue,
Basically, we don't know if they are stored in the brain at all.
We do know that brain function and particular areas like the hippocampal are important for memory storage; we do believe that memory is something like imprinting axonal patterns. But most of it depends on how we see man. Those of us who believe that man is sort of a soul-less complex bag of cells and functions, that fully quits after death and decay, may leave it like this.
Those, who believe, like i do, that man is an embodied soul, a timeless soul in a temporary bodily living, will see this different.
I'm not only refering to 'OBE's' (Out of Body Experiences), but more to observations in experiential psychotherapies like Psychodrama and Constellations. It seems that events in families or other systems, have sort of an imprint in reality. Later, members of that family may, unnoticing, take a particular role or position in that system, sort of trying to solve an unvsolved matter. Another person, taking their position in a roleplay, may have experiences that belong to that positon in the family or other system. Very curious, quite compelling, a very physical and emotional engagement. So, where is that stored?
Our understanding of reality often is influenced by the possibilities of our time. We may nowadays think of our brains as some local desktop with working memories, by and large fitting into a much wider level of consciousness where time and place do not have our everyday meaning, and where all sorts of events are stored.
Sincerely,
Johannes Schilder, MD, phD, psychodramatherapist NVGP.
