If you mean Simvastatin (Zocor, Merck) the answer depends on where you live. The drug is available in generic versions and dosage ranges from 5 mg, 10mg, 20mg, 40 mg and 80 mg once a day.

In the US and several EU countries it is a prescription drug and must be used under medical supervision. In some European countries, 5 and 10 mg dose tablets are available OTC and anyone can buy and use it. Under medical supervision, this popular drug has been prescribed for millions of patients for long term use. Consult your doctor.

Long term use of simvastatin (years!) is safe, but a physician needs to monitor blood tests periodically to ensure there are no side effects on the liver or the muscles.
