FISH stands for Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization. It is a technique used for a variety of genetic conditions and cancers. A FISH being negative means that whatever is being tested for is not present. Without knowing what the FISH was testing for, it is hard to know how to further interpret.

FISH can be utilized for visualization of spesific genes . It is most commonly used for detection of overexpression of a protein called her2/ neu in breast cancer. If you have extra copies of her2 genes in your breast cancer then FISH will be reported as positive. Overexpression of her2 gene lead to increased numbers of HER2 receptors to occur on the surface of the cancer cell and this causes increased activation of various pathways which lead to uncontrolled proliferation and growth of the cancerous tissue. In that case a drug named trastuzumab is used for blocking this reseptor . If your tumor tissue is "FISH negative" than trastuzumab will not be used for treatment instead other therapautic agents will be given .
