Excellent question. Since you are obviously talking about type 2 diabetes and not type 1 I will reserve my comments to this.
It is possible that if longstanding, this metabolic problem could have caused damage to the pancreas, limiting the amount of insulin secreted. However, for the vast majority of newly diagnosed diabetics, a strict portion controlled, low glycemic, Mediterranean style eating pattern combined with daily (and frequent, within the day) activity, muscle strengthening and aerobic activities can turn around completely, or partially, the longstanding metabolic disturbance. It is important to follow the instructions of your physician but careful attention to these parameters, in a motivated patient, can frequently reverse not only the immediate sugar problems but some of the health effects that may already be exhibiting themselves in your body.
I have done this very thing with many patients and the amazing amount of pride it gives them to have taken control of their own health is priceless!!!
