I don't specifically know anything about the research on this particular compound, but from the story you posted, it seems the researchers were encouraged by the results on initial test tube tests. There is a long and expensive process to take something from idea conception to approved medication. As was stated in the article, since it can't be patented, leading to investor profits, it is exceedingly difficult to get the large amounts of money necessary to move this from idea to approved drug. It will likely have to be tested in animals and humans before it can be massed produced. You may want to contact that facility to see where the progress is on this promising agent.
