    Madam,

Any coughing up of blood needs to be investigated and evaluated by your physician, immediately.Hemoptysis is the coughing up of blood from the respiratory system.

Your physician needs to take a thorough history, do a physical examination and needed investigations to find the cause of the coughing up of blood and to rule out the serious conditions.

What color is the blood? Is it frothy? Is there any mucous present? What is the amount of blood? How long were you coughing blood? When do you cough up blood? Are you on any anti-coagulants? What other medicines are you on? Do you have any bleeding disorder? Any recent weight loss? Any fever?

Any history of smoking? Any history of cancer?

There are many causes of coughing up of blood. They range from irritation, trauma, infection, bronchitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, cancer, pulmonary embolus and others.

If there is coughing up of large amount of blood or persistent coughing up of blood or if you feel weak or exhausted or wasted, is an indication that you need to be evaluated in the emergency room, immediately.

So go see your doctor or go to the emergency room, immediately.

    Best wishes!
    • As noted by doctor Francis, coughing up of blood, or in professional terms haemoptysis is a condition that needs an attention of a physician. It can be a minor problem, but unfortunately it is more often a serious thing that needs to be examined thoroughly.
