Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both women and men in the United States.
The death rate in women surpasses breast cancer, ovarian cancer, AIDS and all other reported causes of death. Actually and surprisingly the death rate in women is slightly higher in women than in men.
In 2005, the age-adjusted death rates for diseases of the heart was 211.1 deaths per 100,000 for all Americans. The age-adjusted death rate for whites was 207.8, and 271.3 for African Americans.
Nearly 2400 Americans die of CVD each day—an average of 1 death every 37 seconds.
Coronary heart disease (CHD) caused about 1 of every 5 deaths in the United States in 2005.
By state, age-adjusted death rates per 100,000 for diseases of the heart ranged from 141.1 (Minnesota) to 306.8 (Mississippi) in 2005.
In 2009, heart disease is projected to cost more than $304.6 billion, including health care services, medications, and lost productivity.
Worldwide, coronary heart disease killed more than 7.6 million people in 2005.

Tragically, it's far too common. The often surprising stats about women's heart disease mortality are true. Heart disease this year will kill six times more women than breast cancer (more than all forms of cancer combined, in fact) yet the majority of women would guess that breast cancer is their biggest health threat, despite cure rates of 80-90%. The breast cancer folks have done a fabulous job in raising public awareness (and funds) for their cause. It's a world of PINK out there! They have successfully done this while (mistakenly) convincing us that breast cancer is our worst enemy. If we were actually wanting to combat our worst cancer enemy, we would all be raising awareness and funds for lung cancer, by far women's biggest cancer killer.

While not diminishing in any way the trauma of a breast cancer diagnosis, I am hopeful that campaigns like The Heart Truth (www.thehearttruth.ca ) or Go Red for Heart can do for heart disease awareness what the pink ribbon is doing for breast cancer.
