Liver disease comes in different forms. For example, a viral infection with any of the hepatitis viruses may cause liver disease. Excessive drinking of alcohol may cause liver disease. Toxicity from ingested or even inhaled poisons may cause liver disease. Finally, just eating a poor diet may cause liver disease.
Signs of all these conditions include elevated liver enzymes, elevated serum bilirubin, enlarged liver, and even jaundice (yellowing of the skin). Symptoms of all these conditions include abdominal pain, malaise, nausea and even vomiting. The severity of the disease will vary from person to person, as will the prognosis and combination of signs and symptoms.
