Shaken baby

Hello, my nephew at 7 weeks was shaken and it resulted with an injury to the right side of his skull and they removed part of the skull to relieve the pressure and put it back at about 13 weeks. Immediately after the initial surgery he couldn't move his left side very much, but the strength started returning pretty quickly. He is 3 1/2 monthsj old now and seems to be doing pretty well. He does move his left side now very well. You can see there is a difference between the right and left, but he has been receiving PT and OT since it happened and he is doing very well as far as what they are saying. They said he may have palsy and cognitive issues, I want him to have the best care and progress possible, what else can we do?

Rena, from your description, your nephew appears to have substantially improved since the initial trauma and is continuing to receive ongoing care and treatment. For receiving the "best care' is to continue restorative treatments as directed by the treating physicians and continue the physicians' ongoing clinical monitoring of their patient with appropriate management if and when new issues appear. Also critical to "best care" is to try to maintain as normal a life as possible despite any clinical residuals from the previous trauma and to, of course, attempt to prevent any further avoidable physical or ongoing emotional trauma. Best wishes to your nephew and all the family who have concerns about him. ..Maurice.
