Can you direct me to CBT resources for people with pain?

I am a physical therapist who commonly works with patients with pain, some of which is out of proportion to the condition or persistent after healing.

    Hi Arthur,

Jon Kabat-Zinn developed a program many years ago, called Mindfulness Meditation. It can be helpful to people with chronic pain in that it can alleviate stress levels and increase body awareness. It's often offered at hospitals and HMOs.

As someone who has suffered chronic pain, though, I would suggest that there are remedies outside of PT and CBT that should be considered. Perhaps you could make contact with a good integrative physician in your area who knows how to assess to for vitamin/mineral deficiencies (magnesium deficiency is commonly associated with chronic pain, for example), and neuro-endocrine imbalance.

    • Hi Gina,

Thanks for your answer. Can you share with me any evidence for the remedies you have suggested?

    • HI Arthur, I am merely pointing you in that direction. The evidence will depend on the ailment/injury/pathology. My point is that there is a lot of physiological territory between PT and CBT. :-)

I write a blog http://healthskills.wordpress.com in which I discuss research papers and other resources for psychosocial management of chronic pain. There are several links on the blog that lead to CBT worksheets. Mindfulness and acceptance-based therapies fall within the CBT group of therapies, and it's worth remembering that the most successful outcomes for chronic pain management have been achieved through CBT approaches rather than biomedical treatments.
If you want to include thoughts, beliefs and emotions in your management of pain, any pain, consider looking at BodyinMind (http://bodyinmind.com.au/), or on Facebook, Neuroscience-and-Pain-Science-for-Manual-Physical-Therapists, for loads of resources. Both of these (& my blog) are evidence-based, scientific and practical.
