How can a rotator cuff tear occur as a result of a tight lumbar spine?

Using the joint-by-joint theory, can you explain how can a rotator cuff tear occur as a result of a tight lumbar spine?

  • Did your doctor diagnose this problem? Also, what was the rationale behind your doctor's diagnosis? I am interested in what they are thinking since I have no idea on how the rotator cuff could tear based on a tight lumbar spine. I would think that a tighter lumbar spine would prevent further range-of-motion of the rotator cuff.

  • My doctor did not diagnose me with this. I asked this question for my best friend.

I do not know of any direct reason for a tight lumbar spine to cause a rotator cuff tear.
Rotator cuff injury can occur with overuse- a single severe incident or chronic multiple injuries.
A tight lumbar spine may prevent full motion in that area- which could cause poor mechanics from the lumbar area up the skeletal system, including the shoulders- a severe motion (throwing, etc.) without proper coordinated & compensatory motions elsewhere, may direct extreme forces to the shoulder area & may contribute to the possibility of rotator cuff stress & injury.
Normal,Total body mechanics are necessary, for proper function- especially at the extremes of activity.

I will concur with the other responders. The lumbar spine could not under any normal circumstances cause a rotator cuff tear.

If you would like more help, please be more specific about your condition.

    Good luck.

Check out Medpedia's Article on Shoulder Problems -- it specifically mentions Torn Rotator Cuffs:

    I hope this helps!
