What is the best way to stop a nail biting habit?

I have bitten my nails for as long as I can remember and cannot seem to stop. I do it more often when I am trying to concentrate, if I'm anxious, or if I'm bored.

I have tried using that special nail polish that has a bad taste -- but it irritates my skin, so I cannot scratch or touch my face. It also inhibits me from eating any foods with my fingers because it contaminates everything I touch.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Since you have already identified the factor/factors(anxiety, boredom) that contribute to the action of "nail biting," then you should avail yourself of meditative breathing exercise(Yoga) or/and
something that will thoroughly engage your Mind/Body and Spirit such as Martial Arts.

Nail-biting habit is a compulsive / anxiety disorder. Try keeping your finger nails regularly manicured, short and trimmed. Try also to replace the nail biting with another acceptable behavior, e.g. when you find yourself biting your nail, squeeze an object.
Also, it may be helpul to see a mental health professional to see if there is an anxiety disorder. Relaxation exercises, hypnosis and meditation tend to work. Counselling may be helpful.
Nail- biting tends to be a mal-adaptive,coping behavior that is used to relieve stress.
