What is the best way to alleviate the side effect "remembering to breathe" from methadone?

Other than lowering the dose of the medication, is there another way to alleviate this feeling?

  • The medication works extremely well to relieve my "chronic pain" from "chronic pain syndrome" but this side effect is very annoying.

You most likely are suffering from some respiratory depression that methadone can cause.
Respiratory depression is the chief hazard associated with methadone hydrochloride therapy, due to delayed onset of peak respiratory depressant effects compared with peak analgesic effects.
They should have started the drug at the lowest dose possible and worked the dose up until you had good pain relief. Your doctors could also consider lowering the dose of methadone and adding another drug that does not cause this problem.
At any rate, these symptoms will most likely go away with time BUT have you spoken to the doctor that prescribed the drug for you and told him/her about how you feel? Might be a good idea to do so.
