Cancer of the cervix (cervical cancer) is a disease of the lower narrow portion of the uterus(womb). The cells on the cervix become abnormal. It usually presents in sexually active females in the beginning with no symptoms, or a vaginal discharge, or bleeding from the vagina or pain during sex or pelvic pain. The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) , which is sexually transmitted, is usually the cause for most of the cases of cervical cancer.
The pap smear test( cells are collected from the cervix and vagina and viewed under a microscope to see if they have become abnormal) is commonly used.
Cervical cancer, usually, does not present in adolescence . The Human Papiloma Virus ( HPV)vaccination is now being given to young persons to prevent infection with HPV.
