In 2006 diabetes was attributed to approximately 72,500 deaths in the US and was listed as the seventh leading cause of death listed on U.S. death certificates. More importantly, diabetes (whether type 1 or 2) precipitates multi-system complications including heart disease, kidney disease, blindness, peripheral vascular disease and neuropathy. The associated comorbidities of diabetes increase all told mortality of the disease.

I will answer your question as follows regarding mortality numbers,,,,,,,,,,,FAR TOO MANY!!!!!
The majority of this mortality by Diabetes is brought on by the Complications associated with this complex Disease.
Both Micro and Macro Vascular changes occur because of this disease which can cause Kidney Failure, Cardiomyopathy(Heart Disease and damage to the muscle), Retinopathy and much more DESPITE a person having "good glucose numbers." Having good numbers just slows down the prevailing progression but does not necessarily stop them.
Autonomic and Peripheral Neuropathy are also a part of this Disease.
