What could be possible causes of a rash that begins peeling away skin in the palms of my hands?

Both hands developed little bumps in the very center, and after about 1 week, the area enlarged a bit and skin began peeling away. It seems to be dry, despite use of hand cream.

The most common cause of a rash on the hands is contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis occurs when allergens or irritants come into contact with the hands; producing blistering and peeling of the hands. Allergens may be plants, latex gloves, jewellery(nickel), perfumes or others. Iriitants may be soap, detergent or household chemicals.
This article from the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology explains contact dermatitis of the hands:

Julie: It's not uncommon - see your MD or Dermatologist. RX creams are available and are used in conjuntion with a good hand cream and use of gloves (rubber for use around water, and cotton for regular use). I have had minor outbreaks since the first one when medicine was prescribed. Like you my hands were peeling away! Now I use the medicine the minute I see peeling and it clears it up fairly quickly.

Thanks. My Dermatologist did prescribe a cream that works for me as you describe. What I wonder is why this type of condition or issue developed in the first place? I never had it before, and have not changed dish soaps or cleaning products in the past few years. Yet suddenly my palms are affected.

Doctors don't seem to know why this happens. It's commonly called "eczema" and sometimes is accompanied by itching. If it should be contact dermatitis you could try trial and error to see what aggravates your skin. Wash everything in the bathroom and kitchen with water/clorox, then use different soaps for hands and clothes, etc. Hope the cream works quickly for you. My doctor did stress use of a good hand cream in conjunction with his prescription - Luberderm and Eucerin are both very good. White cotton gloves will help keep the moisture in and dirt out - I found mine at a drug store that also carries hospital supplies. Think they were $2.00 a pair. I do know that "eczema" occurs across all ages and isn't caused by "poor hygiene".
