I am not one of the managers of Medpedia so perhaps they should answer this question more completely. However, my response to your question would be with the word "carefully". You should be aware of the statement from Medpedia "The content on or accessible through Medpedia.com is for informational purposes only. Medpedia is not a substitute for professional advice or expert medical services from a qualified health professional" and also read the Terms located at http://www.medpedia.com/terms

It really depends on what context you intend to cite the material and where in Medpedia you have selected the information. If the context is related to specific medical issues, particularly of a personal need, I would suggest you discuss this with your own physician and not be satisfied with the information presented here. ..Maurice..

The format for citing Medpedia depends on the style guide used in the list of references. As stated in Medpedia's Terms of Use (www.medpedia.com/terms), it is required to use a link back to the Medpedia article page when citing content from the wiki encyclopedia. Here are a few examples of appropriate citations in commonly used style guides:

    MLA Format:
    "Cell." Medpedia. 30 January 2010. Web. 03 March 2010. <http://wiki.medpedia.com/Cell>

    APA Format:
    Cell. (2010, January 30). In Medpedia. Retrieved March 03 2010, from http://wiki.medpedia.com/Cell

Thank you, Dr. Bernstein, for providing a thoughtful response and for citing Medpedia's Terms of Use.
    • No offense intended---there just seems to be a lot of "opinions" on the site, which, depending on the reference use, might be misleading to some.....

    • Hi Dr. Williams- none taken. We appreciate your honesty- I agree with you that Questions & Answers has a more subjective tone. Do you find the medical encyclopedia to be dominated by opinions? Feel free to send me a message or email (adilaura@medpedia.com).

If you are going to use "Medpedia" as a reference, then "http:medpedia.com/" should be your footnote or site reference. I agree with Dr Williams, that an opinion site or any site that does screen for accuracy by an editorial board, makes the reference one to reinforcement ones opinion. I would recommend that medical students not use Medpedia as a source for their learning, but rather a place to share their knowledge.

And that's why I like the posing of ethics questions: THERE ARE NO ABSOLUTELY CORRECT ANSWERS THAT EVERYONE MUST AGREE WITH. NEVERTHELESS, ETHICS QUESTIONS ARE INTELLECTUALLY STIMULATING AND EVERY PERSON WHO HAS THE MENTAL ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND THE ISSUE CAN PROVIDE AN ANSWER WHICH CAN BE CONSIDERED BY OTHERS EVEN IF THE PERSON HAS NEVER GONE TO COLLEGE. ..Maurice..
