YES The plaque forms in the arteries due to elevated cholesterol and triglycerides. If this plaque breaks off, it travels to end organs and can lead to an occlusion (blockage). This can cause CVA (strokes), MI (heart attack), arterial occlusive disease in the legs and feet which can lead to gangrene, renal failure, blindness, pulmonary embolism.......anywhere that plaque ends up. The common ones are the ones most written about, and that are the ones in the carotid arteries. If they become mobile, they travel to the brain and the end result is a stroke. It is only one cause of stroke, however.
