I am a 43-year old female and have type I diabetes since I was 12 and no complications. Two months ago I had an operation for a herniated disk (05-01). After the operation the metatarsal skin of my left foot became very sensitive to touch and I started experiencing intermittent tingling and burning sensations and some pain. My surgeon says that these symptoms cannot be post-operative. I thought that I may have diabetic neuropathy and underwent an electromyograph but it produced no conclusive diagnosis of diabetic neuropathy. The neurologist tentatively prescribed Lyrica and it seems to alleviate the symptoms somewhat although not substantially. Can the symptoms be attributed to the operation, diabetic neuropathy, or a combination? And is Lyrica safe for long-term use or will it have adverse effects, especially on my renal function?

You do not state whether you have T1DM or T2DM,,,,,,,,so the confusion just adds itself. You can have Complications and not be entirely aware of them whether they be Peripheral Neuropathy or/and Autonomic Neuropathy. These Neuropathies are a part of having Diabetes and have nothing to do with blood glucose values except in bringing them on much sooner than otherwise.
Lyrica is often prescribed to those with Diabetes who have Peripheral Neuropathy. There are many side effects associated with Lyrica, including suicide ideation.
It is important that you speak with your Physician about this drug as well as establish a good means of communication. Otherwise seek a Physician who will be able to communicate with you and who you feel comfortable with.
