Are only surgeons qualified to place a trach or can a lay person do this?

Are there situations where lay persons are trained to surgically insert a trach?

    Dear Ms.
The word "trach" can mean a couple of things. Let me try to clarify and answer your question.
Many individuals are "qualified" to perform a tracheotomy, which is an opening into the trachea to create an open airway. This is considered an emergency procedure and many disciplines are taught how to do this. Surgeons, obviously, but also non-surgical physicians, emergency medical personnel, Registered Nurses, Respiratory Therapist, medics in the military. A tracheostomy, is a surgical procedure for the placement of a airway device is a surgical procedure that should be performed by a trained surgeon, in a sterile environment. If this tracheostomy device needs to be removed, replaced or adjusted then many healthcare (and sometimes family members in rare situations) can be taught to make these adjustments. Particularly, homecare nurses, respiratory therapist, and hospice personnel are taught to replace them in the home.
