Salt intake in a tropical climate

When I moved to S.E.Asia in '72, the wisdom of the day advised salt tablets to help counter the effects of dehydration in a tropical climate. In view of the current attitudes to reduce salt intake, does this wisdom still apply and how might one recognise a lack of salt and deal with it in a way that would be efficient without risking the effects of salt over use?

Salt is a dietary need. The biggest concern for monitoring salt in one's diet is fluid retentition and hypertension (high blood pressure). I am going to assume that you have a health care advisor in Asia and this individual can advise you if salt and fluid are things your diet should be restricting.

Dehydration is a lack of fluid.
Excess sweating can cause that lack of fluid & since sweat contains sodium (salt), & excess loss can cause a deficiency- such deficiency can cause fatigue & muscle cramping (as early less severe symptoms)
Sweating is associated with activity; temperature & humidity; so these factors (along with symptoms) will help determine if you require salt tablets; normally salted foods should suffice as long as heart disease, hypertension & edema (fluid) are not present.
If present any salt may have to be restricted-per instructions from a local physician
    (someone aware of local conditions).
