CPAP pressure?

What are the downsides of changing the CPAP pressure settings? I would like to increase the pressure from the present setting of 9 to 11. Some days my nasal passages are much more narrow than other days so I would like to increase the pressure on problem days. What is the procedure to titrate the pressure without going back and doing a sleep study?
Thanks in advance, Paul S

Temporarily increasing your CPAP pressure by 2cm shouldn't pose any problems, especially if the added pressure is helping you sleep. I'm not sure where you live, but UCSF has several research studies underway for the treatment of apnea and/or snoring. http://sleepsurgery.ucsf.edu/research/
    • Thanks for your reply. I live in L.A. so UCSF is too far. Another question: how can I tell when the pressure is too high. Some days when my passages are very narrow I would like to increase it much more. Instead of modifying the pressure frequently I would like to leave it at a high pressure if there are no side effects.

    • I think you're safe with a pressure of 11-12 cm . Ive seen some people using as much as 20cm. The only side effects I can think of, are nasal irritation and/or dryness. If the higher pressure works well for, just run it by your doctors, so that they know. Like Gina said, you may have to have someone examine your nasal passages.

Just a thought....you could consider taking steps to prevent your nasal passages from narrowing -- perhaps by addressing allergens in your diet or environment. Allergies can impair brain function as much as sleep loss.
