I've found several references to nicosan (as well as the alternate names niprisan and hemoxin) as an "alternative remedy" to treating Sickle Cell Disease.

This phyto-chemical (plant-based) treatment is a ethanol/water extract of Piper guineenses seeds, Pterocapus osum stem, Eugenia caryophyllum fruit, and Sorghum bicolor leaves. Reportedly, these are Nigerian herbs.

Unfortunately, I see no current definitive reports on its efficacy and safety. But the European Medicine Evaluation Agency approved orphan drug status for niprisan in 2005, and the US FDA did so in 2003, based on these research results:

    http://www2.cochrane.org/reviews/en/ab004448.html

    Main results
Reports of two trials were found, of which only one, including 82 participants, was eligible for inclusion in this review. This Phase IIB (pivotal) trial suggests that a phytomedicine, NIPRISAN®, was effective in reducing episodes of SCD crisis associated with severe pain over a six-month period. NIPRISAN® did not appear to affect the risk of severe complications or the level of anaemia. No serious adverse effects were reported.

    Authors' conclusions
While NIPRISAN®, as a phytomedicine, appeared to be safe and effective in reducing crises associated with severe pain over a six-month follow-up period of this trial, further trials are required to assess its role in the management of people with sickle cell disease. The results of Phase III, multicentre trials are awaited.

A term search of The Sickle Cell Disease Association of America website gave no results for nicosan, niprisan, or hemoxin.

Here is the website of the Nigerian company that makes Nicosan,

(It looks like there has been leadership changes over the year; perhaps the company has been ineffective in bringing the product to market.)

There's also a Facebook fan page for nicosan; perhaps you could visit and review the resources there:

    I hope that helps!
