Professional summary

My growth in clinical research has in many ways paralleled the decade-long path new therapeutics must follow from the bench into clinical trials and then onto the market. Just as drug innovation begins in the laboratory, my career in research began in a Biosafety Level III laboratory at the School of Medicine at Southern Illinois University where I worked on my undergraduate honor’s thesis studying the transmission of HIV (Ibata B et al., “Migration of Foreign Lymphocytes from the Mouse Vagina into the Cervicovaginal Mucosa and to the Illiac Lymph Nodes”. Biology of Reproduction 56:537-543, 1997). Shortly after graduating with honors with a B.S. (with minors in chemistry and physiology) I moved to St. Louis for a master’s degree in public health (MPH). My interest in becoming a leader in regulatory affairs then led to a law degree (JD) with certificate in health law while my interest in honing my skills in research methodology led me to complete a PhD. While completing three graduate level degrees I have worked full-time in clinical research where I have grown from a research assistant in trauma surgery to the project manager for all neurosurgical clinical trials – with an emphasis in neuro-oncology My current position is vertically integrated with responsibility for overall protocol oversight including: protocol identification, contract/budgeting, regulatory, IRB submission, staff/resident training, supervision of research coordinators, billing and research compliance. In 2003 I was invited to be a member of the Audit Committee for the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group and in 2004 I joined the North American Exam Committee for the Association of Clinical Research Professionals. I have been certified in regulatory affairs (RAC) since 2001 and clinical research (CCRC) since 2002. I am a member of my institution’s Institutional Review Baord (IRB) and teach as an adjunct faculty member. In addition to participating in resident education at a major academic medical center, I am a member of my local IRB and have a law journal article related to clinical research compliance published in Medical Trial Technique Quarterly (Ibata B. “Institutional Review and Clinical Research – Proactive IRBs and Risk Reduction” 48:3).

Books

Public Health Law and the Built Environment in American Public Schools

VDM Verlag Dr. Müller
2009
This book explores the history of the built environment in American public schools and how the common schoolhouse devolved into national system of locally controlled public school buildings that compel its occupants to exposures in environments worse than those acceptable in private workplaces. Policies related to domains in the built environment are analyzed and alternative policies are recommended. This book would be a valuable resource for anyone at the local, state or federal level interested in cost-effective policies related to the built environment in American public schools.
