Professional summary

Christina Zarcadoolas, PhD., and co-authors Andrew Pleasant and David S. Greer published Advancing Health Literacy: A Framework for Understanding and Action (Jossey Bass, 2006) to critical acclaim. The textbook presents a multi dimensional model of health literacy that includes the domains of fundamental literacy, science literacy, cultural literacy and civic literacy. The New England Journal of Medicine review of Advancing Health Literacy calls it "required reading" for public health professionals responsible for developing new tools for communicating with patients and the general public. "We recommend that public health directors make this book required reading for everyone." (NEJM, Feb.15, 2007 p757-758). Dr. Zarcadoolas is the Director of the Mount Sinai Center for Public Engagement in Health and Environmental Literacy, a new initiative whose mission is to consolidate and focus efforts across departments and divisions to address pressing health literacy issues.
