Colonel (Dr) Sven T. Berg is the Chief of the Medical Staff at the 59th Medical Wing, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He is responsible for planning and administering medical services, developing policy, maintaining health standards, and supervising patient care and delivery at the Air Force’s largest medical facility, comprised of four clinical divisions, 35 departments and 20 services. He directs the professional medical care delivered by a staff of 4,200 military and civilian personnel, including 420 physicians and more than 600 students, entailing over one million outpatient visits and 25 thousand inpatient admissions per year. He orchestrates education and training, facilitating implementation of best clinical practices, national patient safety goals, and disease prevention and management strategies. As a consultant to the interim governing council for the San Antonio Military Healthcare System, he is guiding the integration of clinical quality services.
