St. Nicolaasga

Professional summary

As a medical doctor I specialised in psychological influences on physical disease. I graduated in 1989 at the State University of Groningen, The Netherlands. In the next six years I did my PhD with prof. Marco de Vries on psychological changes preceding (otherwise) spontaneous tumor regression; this work was done at the Helen Dowling Institute for Biopsychosocial Medicine/ Erasmus University Rotterdam. I clinically coordinated a phase II trial on effects of psychotherapy on cancer. As a researcher I trained with the psychotherapists and from 1996 I trained psychosynthesis techniques with Rudy Rijke, MD, PhD and Joke de Vries, MD, PhD. Later on I trained in experiential therapy/ Focusing and most recently in Psychodrama. I have been in private practice for psychomedical help to people with physical disease since 2001.

PhD, medicine, psycho-oncology
1989 to 1996
With the late prof. Marco de Vries we studied psychological changes preceding clinical improvement in patients with spontaneous regression of cancer (PhD study; Schilder et al., Clinical Case Studies, 2004). Access to essential activities and experiences seems most closely to precede the onset of tumour regression and otherwise clinical improvement (f.e. increases in hemoglobin, appetite, weight, condition). In a phase II trial (De Vries et al., Psycho-Oncology, 1997), we observed temporarily halting of tumor growth in 1 out of 7 patient with cancer, not amenable to further anti-cancer treatment, in time related to individual and group, existential and experiential psychotherapy. The halting of tumorgrowth lasted 3 months up to 2 years.
