Professional summary

I'm currently a second-year med student at the Medical University of South Carolina. On the side, I'm managing a project at a different top-level, MedStudents.me. Essentially, I want to organize a system for multilateral collaboration between med students across the country. We need a national file-sharing system so that med students can share and edit an electronic syllabus for all of their courses. I'm also very active in patient networking. We need a simple way to find other patients and share our life experiences with one another. (Be patient, we're working on it.) My research interests include studying the healthcare dynamics that military veterans experience as it relates to the psychosocial sequelae of PTSD. Not sure when I'll graduate. . . these projects will require an "unconventional" pathway as a med student. Oh well, conformity is overrated anyway. I recognize that I do not own the copyrights to the Medipedia label (although I do own the rights to the Medipedia.me domain.) As described in prior communications, my efforts are intended to complement- not compete with- the Medpedia project. Please contact me with any questions regarding copyright, professionalism, or any other concerns. Honoring my colleagues' hard work is a central aspect of this project. To be clear, I will not be uploading any educational materials into the MedStudents.me system without proper authorization.

Mentors

Chris Pelic, MD

"In my role as Associate Dean for Students, my job is to help get students from orientation to graduation. More specifically, I serve as a mentor, supervisor, and teacher for the students. I work closely with Dr. Wong, and Myra Haney ensuring students' successful progress through medical school so that each student can match in the specialty of their choice."

Daoud Hari

While I do not know him personally, Daoud Hari's work as described in his memoir "The Translator" inspires me. See the web sites section above for a link to his book's official site.

Myra Haney Singleton

"My primary role is to advise, counsel and support medical students in their transition from student to physician. My duties include monitoring the academic progress of students, conducting individual counseling to ensure that students are afforded every opportunity to succeed. Other responsibilities include managing several College of Medicine Committees."

Robert Jeffs, MD

Dr. Jeffs was a legend. What more can I say? He's the reason that I call myself "Robert." His compassion and technical skill will not be forgotten.

Todd Purves, MD

I sincerely appreciate Dr. Purves' support and advice regarding patient networking and research interests (especially regarding cloacal exstrophy patients.)

William Reiner, MD

Dr. Reiner was instrumental in broadening my horizons and opening doors for me.

Experience

Second Year Medical Student, Graded. [UPCOMING]

MUSC
2009 to 2010
During my second tour of MS-II, I will complete the necessary coursework to take Step 1 and advance to my clinical rotations.

Second Year Medical Student (Auditing)

MUSC
2009 to 2009
This year I will be auditing all of the second year classes. The purpose of this unconventional pathway is to devote more time to web design (http://www.MedStudents.me) while studying as much as possible of the conventional coursework.

First Year Medical Student

MUSC
2008 to 2009
First year was tough. Lots of information. Not enough time. I suppose it's that way for everyone.

Research Assistant

Mayo Clinic
2005 to 2006
During the summers of 2005 and 2006, I worked in Dr. John Morris' endocrinology research lab at the Mayo Clinic. My work involved tissue culture, bacterial culture, and molecular biology analytic techniques. We designed a novel recombinant adenovirus for the treatment of prostate cancer. (This project is currently in clinical trials.)

Grocery Store Employee

Food Lion
2003 to 2004
I spent about a year working full time as an employee at Food Lion #375. This is the true lifestyle specialty. Nice people, low stress, good times. A working class hero is something to be.

Honors and Awards

Various Silliness

Prof. Et al
2003
Y'know, the usual "award ceremony" stuff that colleges like to do. Nothing too special, just the usual Refrigerator Fodder. (yay, I'm special.)

Disclosure or Conflict of Interest

Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the above information. However, there may be typographical errors, etc. I (Robert Mark Parrish) make no representation that the above information provides complete documentation of my Curriculum Vitae. I have no official affiliations with any corporations or institutions other than my role as a second-year med student at MUSC. However, I am the registrant of http://www.Medipedia.me and am developing a project at http://www.MUSC.me (among other ventures.) This will eventually become a national syllabus system for med students and is intended to complement the efforts of the Medpedia project. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
